Top 5 Favorite Episodes of 2013

Well, the year is almost done and I managed to do about 16 new episodes this year. I probably could have done 5 or 6 more if things panned out. With this type of series, everything is based on a lot of factors: my schedule, the band’s schedule, weather, location, etc. So I was happy to have filmed that many episodes and hope to do more in 2014.

While it’s tough picking favorites, there was quite a few videos I ended up watching over and over than others. No offense to other bands or anything, it’s just some episodes I’m more proud of, or made me laugh a lot or a lot of memorable things happened during or before/after filming. I managed to film a lot of people on my wish list this year and crossing my fingers I get to film even more of my favorite artists & bands in the new year.

Here’s my top 5 favorite episodes of 2013:

1. The Beards

By far my favorite video of the year! It was tough filming these guys because I was trying to hold in laughing throughout the video.

2. Carbon Leaf

The very first band I thought of when I started Before The Concert. They didn’t disappoint!

3. Willie Nile

Didn’t know what to expect with filming in a small room in Barnes and Noble but ended up be a ton of fun!

4. Tim Warren of The Alternate Routes

While we waited to go inside the club, I filmed Tim singing “Stereo” and it’s one I always watch. Not because of my crappy filming, but how great Tim is in the episode.

5. Nick Gill

Nick was the first episode of the new year, it was in January and wasn’t too cold but it was still pretty chilly. We only filmed the one song but it was a lot of fun trying to get it right.

June 2013 Update

Well it’s been awhile since last updating the site with any news but I have been posting on Twitter and Facebook. If you want to stay up to date, be sure to like us, follow us, whatever.

I hope everyone has been enjoying the videos so far! I’ve been trying to post 1 or 2 videos a month. I filmed (with the help of my wife Kristen sometimes) Justin Sane of Anti-Flag, The Jim Ivins Band, Brad Mackeson and the hilarious The Beards lately. I’ve been trying to film a lot more but things have been canceled last minute in the last month. Those things happen when a) you’re trying to film musicians before their hectic shows b) it’s NYC so anything can happen like traffic and c) just scheduling things can be rough and can’t find time to do it. Weather has something to do with as well.

I probably shouldn’t post who I’m going to film because things might not happen and might get people disappointed. Lately when I saw I’m going to film someone, it falls through. I’m projected to film at least two bands this month, and even more in July. We’ll see if they actually happen or not. I hope!

If you haven’t been paying attention to local New York news, the city is trying to put a stop to street musicians. Anyone performing is considered a vendor, at least that’s my understanding of it and they have to play in a certain spot or be subject to a fine. I haven’t run into this just yet but I’m hoping its not a problem or might have to get creative with filming. I really don’t want to just film inside, backstage at a venue if I don’t have to. That will become really stale after awhile. In the winter that’s an option but now that’s it summer, I want to film outside! We’ll see how that goes.

Like always, if you want to help out in any way or have a band/musician in mind, please let me know at I could use all the help I can get!

Episode 8: The Beards

The Beards, now here is a band that was a lot of fun to film! The Beardly bearded band from South Australia met up with me on one of their press days in Washington Square Park on Wednesday night. The band has been touring this Winter/Spring with dates in LA, Austin (SXSW), Toronto, and New York City. They will be hitting the festival circuit in Australia and Europe as well. The guys sang three hilarious songs about…well you guessed it…BEARDS!

When I arrived at the park after work, it wasn’t really hard to spot the band hanging out by the fountain. We decided to film off to the side since there was other people playing guitars. They performed three tunes (“Born with a Beard,” “Shaved Off His Beard,” and “If Your Dad Doesn’t Have A Beard, You’ve Got Two Mums”) off their Beards, Beards, Beards album. Their latest album Having a Beard is the New Not Having a Beard was released last year but is definitely worth picking up!

After the first song, a fan in the park recognized the band and came over to touch their beards. I didn’t realize until after that Nathaniel Beard was making the girl’s scarf into a beard. It was a great moment, which is all in the episode! It was tough trying to film these guys and not laugh while filming. I think I did well. Even when the camera wasn’t on, the guys were making Beard related puns and jokes. I had a big grin on my face after filming The Beards and they were definitely one of my favorites to film to date. Thanks to Mark Tyson for taking my picture with the band! I always seem to forget to take a picture with the bands and musicians that I film.

If you like YouTube better, you can watch the episode over at the Before The Concert channel.
